Dating shouldn’t stop just because you are wearing a ring. Once you get married, going out on a date is still an important aspect of your relationship.

Just think about this. When you were dating, before marriage, neither you nor your spouse was too concerned with the life issues of the other – at least not most of the time. However, once you exchange rings, everything that happens in each other’s lives becomes important: do you owe a great deal of money on credit cards - does she? Do you have children – does she? If either does, it now becomes the responsibility of both to raise the child or children. You worry about employment or career opportunities. Before you were married, if you lost your job you would just find another. You only had to worry about yourself. These are just a few aspects of life couples worry about once married. Life’s issues can create a great deal of stress and strain on a marriage.

Getting away from reality, even if it is just for a few hours or one night, can help refresh frayed nerves or at the least take a little edge off the stress.

You must remember marriage is not a key to a dungeon. You cannot lock your spouse in the house (rhyming intentional) and create a happy, functioning environment. You must continue to be the thoughtful individual you were when you were dating and trying to win her devotion. Of course, once married, you must also pay attention to the responsibilities of marriage. However, you cannot use them as an excuse to become a couch potato or warden of her cell. Take her on the same date nights she enjoyed when you were dating. Surprise her with cards or flowers. Surprise her with a phone call and a spontaneous night on the town.

Dating need not be expensive. You cannot use a lack of money as an excuse for being a hermit. If you do not have children, there is no excuse for not continuing your dating experience. If money is in short supply or you do have children, it is even more important to find time to take your wife on some of the following inexpensive dates. If you do not, it could cost you a great deal more in the long run.

Some inexpensive dates that can be a great deal of fun:

  1. Walk on the pier or in the park and order an ice cream or a coke. Sit and talk.
  2. Go on a picnic. Since you planned the picnic, you can take the food you like to eat. However, be certain to take what she also likes.
  3. Go for a drive and just talk.
  4. Go to the mall and buy her a new dress.
  5. Go to a movie.
  6. Go to a free concert or anything free that would be fun.
  7. Rent a bicycle for two, if you do own one, and go for a ride.

There are many wonderful dates that cost little or nothing, but these dates can add excitement and joy to your relationship. You cannot blame being an aloof husband on a lack of money or work. If you do, you may be on a downward spiral. She may not wait around will you try to figure out your priorities. Why take a chance.

Make your wife and family the focal point of your marriage. Keep going on dates. Keep excitement alive in your relationship. Trust me, if you have found what you believe is the one person with whom you wish to spend the rest of your life, you will never be as happy without her as you are with her.
